Predictions Review 12/13

At the start of last season predictions were a challenge. It’s always a bit of a shot in the dark as football still has the ability to surprise us, but for the most part the top half of the table looked pretty easy to predict whereas the bottom half was a tougher call.

Two out of the four of us correctly predicted Manchester United to be crowned champions, but all four of us correctly predicted the four teams that would occupy the top four positions in the league with three out of four correctly predicting Spurs would finish fifth.

In contrast nobody predicted the bottom three, nobody got the correct three teams let alone getting them in the right order. Only one of us thought Queens Park Rangers were doomed. West Brom exceeded the expectations of everyone especially Matt who thought they would go down, as did Swansea who Dave predicted would get relegated. However two of the four of us did predict Reading and Wigan for the drop.

The biggest disappointments of the season were Newcastle, who everyone predicted would finish in the top half.

Quite remarkably nobody took a punt on Robin Van Persie to be top league goal scorer.

So comparing our predicted tables to the real final table, Matt only managed to get one team out of twenty in the correct position, Dave did better with four and Alex also managed to get four teams in the correct position but the clear winner was Tom with seven including the top five. As a comparison BBC’s Mark Lawrenson only got two teams in the correct position for his predicted table, despite having the advantage of it being generated by the results he predicted during the season.
